Melford hit for eight in Vase

FA VASE

FIRST ROUND

Long Melford 0

Brantham Athletic 8

Upsets do happen in the cup, but on this occasion hot favourites Brantham were too good for underdogs Long Melford.

Melford created a few chances in the first half, the best of which was a free header for Ashley Skeggs, but they went in at the break 3-0 down.

The start of the second half saw Melford under relentless pressure and, after surviving several near misses, the expected avalanche of goals duly arrived though young keeper Liam Hastie had a good day and couldn’t be faulted.

Melford nearly scored a consolation goal late on when following good work by the hard-working Richie Partridge, substitute Courtney Prince did well to work a shooting angle but saw his effort saved.

Melford: Hastie, Simpson, Toole, Owen, Durell, Attwood, Guyon, Partridge, Skeggs, Westcott, Daw. Subs (all used): Jack Hubbard, Will Wingfield, Courtney Prince.

n Melford will look to bounce back when they travel to Ipswich Wanderers in the league on Saturday (3pm) before hosting Braintree Town Reserves in the Red Insure Thurlow Nunn League Cup first round on Tuesday (7.45pm).
