QUARTER-FINAL

Haverhill Borough 3 Cornard United 2

The nerves were jangling at The New Croft last night as Cornard United came very close to pulling back a 3-0 deficit, only to lose out to the hosts.

Borough took a tenth minute lead thanks to a Craig Pruden shot and doubled their advantage 11 minutes later when Matt Staines was fouled in the box and skipper Harry Halls sent Ards ‘keeper Colin Athey the wrong from the resulting penalty kick.

Staines was again in the thick of the action four minutes into the second period when his cross was turned in at the far post by Pruden for his second of the night and Borough’s third.

Cornard fought back valiantly and goals in the 60th and 80th minutes from Ezra Drann and Jack Marshall left the match on a knife edge, but Borough survived and went on to earn a semi-final away to March Town United on March 8.

The winner of that tie will play either Stowmarket Town or Halstead Town in the final.
