Halstead Town manager Mark McLean has boldly claimed promotion is still in their own hands this season, writes Alex Moss.
The Humbugs head into the weekend in eighth place in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division table and are 16 points adrift of Haverhill Borough, who occupy the third and final promotion place.
But with games in hand on almost all of the sides above them in the table, and with third place Borough set to visit Rosemary Lane this Saturday (3pm), McLean still believes his side will be in the mix for promotion come the business end of the season.
“There’s certainly a gap there (between us and the top three),” said the Halstead boss.
“But the top three have played a few more games than us and when you look at the games we’ve got left to play it’s very much in our own hands.
“We’ve got a very good run of games. The games against teams in the mix we have at home, you’d prefer that to being away.
“We’ll take it game by game, but I’m confident we’ll be in and around it (the top three) when it really matters.
“Saturday is a massive one for us. If we can win, it will give us some real momentum to hopefully kick on with.”
The Humbugs follow Saturday’s pivotal clash against Borough by hosting bottom side Leiston Reserves on Tuesday night (7.45pm). Maximum points from those two could propel them into the top six.
