Hadleigh suffer in nine-goal thriller

RIDGEONS LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

Leiston 6

Hadleigh United 3

HADLEIGH’S five-match unbeaten run was ended in a nine-goal thriller against title-favourites Leiston at Victory Road on Tuesday.

The scoring started after just 43 seconds, when Josh Mayhew created a goal for Duane Wright to give Hadleigh the lead.

But Leiston were back on level terms after 10 minutes with an overhead kick from Michael Brothers.

Play was soon at the other end where keeper Jamie Stannard was deceived when a shot from Ben Deacon took a deflection to restore Hadleigh’s lead.

The determined home side again drew level when Heath’s shot was blocked and Harrop netted the loose ball after 43 minutes.

At the interval it was still anybody’s game, but a remarkable start to the second half saw Leiston score three more goals inside seven minutes to leave Hadleigh completely shell-shocked.

Harrop, Head and Ottley-Gooch were the home side’s marksmen but the goal-fest continued as the lively Deacon made it 5-3 with a goal for Hadliegh on the hour.

The visitors continued to look for further goals but left themselves exposed at the back with Sacker scoring a sixth for Leiston just before the end.

l Hadleigh Reserves lost 2-0 against Stonham Aspal in a Peel Cup first round match at a freezing Millfield on Tuesday.

On a rock-hard surface Stonham scored after 65 and 85 minutes.
