More than 100 sides battled it out at AFC Sudbury’s Grassroots Festival over the weekend.

In its seventh year, organisers had to limit the numbers this year to keep it manageable, with 50 sides playing in the heat on Saturday and 67 braving the downpours on Sunday.

Age groups ranged from under-7s to under-16s with seven-a-side for the youngest and five-a-side formats for the older groups.

Amid fierce competition, there were no Sudbury winners on the day, but the club’s head youth coach Tony New said it had been another resounding success.

“It was a brilliant weekend. People were saying how much they enjoyed it and they come back every year, from Woodbridge to Felixstowe,” he said of the event which serves as the club’s biggest youth section fundraiser.

“We have to give a huge thanks to all the volunteers for giving up their weekend and it was run very well.”
