Fantastic display by keeper Sam

THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE

FIRST DIVISION

Long Melford 1

Saffron Walden Town 1

An excellent display by goalkeeper Sam Mansfield saw Long Melford share the spoils with title-chasing Saffron Walden Town.

Mansfield saved a penalty from former Queens Park Rangers player Stuart Wardley on the stroke of half-time and the Essex side continued to be frustrated by some stubborn Melford defending and agile goalkeeping from Mansfield.

Ross Laird also hit the post for the visitors, while at the other end Gareth Thomas was denied by Jason Harvey.

Mansfield acrobatically kept out Louis Harper’s volley, but the young custodian was finally beaten when the ball appeared to be bundled out of his grasp from a corner and Laird headed in.

However, Mansfield set up the hosts’ equaliser just two minutes later when his long kick eluded the Walden defence and Jack Durey nipped in to lob a hesitant goalkeeper from 12 yards.

Walden surged forward again, but man-of-the-match Mansfield brilliantly kept them at bay, denying a great drive from ex-Villager Dan Grinrod among others.
