AFC Sudbury: new frontman fully charged and ready to fire

IAN Manby hopes AFC Sudbury can be the club where new signing Danny Charge finally fulfils his potential.
The Yellows’ assistant is looking forward to seeing the former Conference striker in action with top scorer James Baker.
Despite turning out at the highest level of non-League football, Charge has suffered an injury-hit career – the most recent being a bad ankle problem towards the end of last season.
“We’ve had two or three so-called injury-prone players and we’ve got them playing football, so hopefully Danny is another one,” said Manby. “He comes with very good potential and he should fit in to what we are trying to achieve this season, which is reaching the play-offs.
“Strikers are a commodity at any club and it’s always difficult to find that player who will net you 20 goals a season.
“James Baker does a very good job for us and is a great player – people underestimate the amount of work he gets through in a game and he’s got a very good scoring record.”
Although AFC have lost five of their last six matches in all competitions – including exiting the Suffolk Premier Cup and Ryman League Cup at the quarter-final stages – Manby believes the statistics belie their recent displays.
“We’ve been playing some very good football – we’ve just been unlucky in front of goal,” he said. “We are creating good chances and just not putting the ball in the net, which is the thing that gives you points.”
AFC are currently eighth in Ryman One North, two points off the play-off zone and 15 behind leaders Leiston.
Saturday’s trip to 14th-placed Chatham Town in the league (3pm) will be Manby’s third match as assistant to manager Chris Tracey, following a lengthy stint with the King’s Marsh-based outfit’s reserve side.
“I’m enjoying it,” he said of his new role. “I’ve always wanted to move up to a higher level.
“I’ve spent four years serving my apprenticeship with the reserves and changed them from being an older side to a very young team that brings players through to move up to first-team football.
“I’m ready for the challenge and assist Chris as we push for the play-offs.”
