AFC suffer cup heartbreak in shootout

AFC Sudbury went out of the Alan Boon Ryman League Cup at Ryman Premier League side Lewes on Wednesday night, after losing a dramatic quarter-final peanlty shootout in Sussex 5-4.

Lewes on-loan goalkeeper Rikki Banks was the hero for the home side as his save earned them a place in the semi-final, which includes Suffolk rivals Bury Town.

Sudbury had taken a first half lead against the fourth-placed Premier Division side — one league above them — when Robbie Martin’s angled shot looped over Banks at the far post, but Lewes were level by half-time when Matt Somners headed home.

Despite chances in the second half the tie went to penalties, with both sides missing a kick before Banks saved from youngster Ryan Henshaw to finally knock AFC out.
