Nineteen-year-old Luke Avenell, making his first-team debut, was the penalty shootout hero as AFC Sudbury reached the quarter-final of the Robert Dyas Ryman League Cup, beating Witham Town 4-3 on penalties after the third round tie had finished 1-1.

AFC switched keepers in injury time, with Avenell taking over from Louis Johnson 30 seconds before the final whistle and marking his debut by saving the first Witham penalty, his first touch.

Kris Newby converted a penalty 52 minutes, with Vincent Durant replying for Witham after 71.

AFC Sudbury now switch their attentions back to their league play-off chase on Saturday when they travel to Brentwood Town (3pm).
