RYMAN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE NORTH
AFC Sudbury 2
by Pat Arbon at
AFC SUDBURY made their first ever visit to Cheshunt on Tuesday and it proved to be a successful one thanks to a goal in each half from James Baker and Dave Wareham.
Nicky Smith made one change from the team that started Saturday’s game with defender Taylor Sinfield coming in at the expense of Liam Whittaker — and saw his side record their first clean sheet in nine games.
It was midway through the half before either side created an opening and it came to Sudbury via route-one when keeper Nicky Eyre’s long kick found Dave Wareham in the clear, but under pressure he shot over the crossbar.
Little had been seen of the hosts as an attacking force, but Iain Salt had a shot blocked before Sudbury spilt the home defence to find Dan Emmanuel unmarked in front of goal, but with only the keeper to beat he lobbed over.
Six minutes before the break, the deadlock was broken when Emmanuel did well on the right corner to find James Baker in the box.
He shook off his marker and squared to Dave Wareham, who tapped home at the far post to give Sudbury a half-time lead.
The second half was a completely different story with the home side piling on the pressure, but they found the Sudbury rear guard in fine form.
Despite the home pressure, Sudbury came close to doubling their lead after 71 minutes when, from a fine counter-attack, Baker set up Emmanuel, but his rocket shot struck the crossbar and went over.
Back came Cheshunt and the Sudbury defence had to work hard to protect their lead.
But it should have been cancelled out two minutes from time when Brad Harrison had an air shot in front of goal when it looked easier to score.
Sudbury made the game safe with a second goal in the last minute.
The same three players were involved as the first.
This time Dave Wareham did well to pick out Emmanuel and he found Baker who netted from close range to seal a Sudbury victory.
