Will’s World: Sudbury Cricket Club’s Will Shropshire gives his latest thoughts on life at the club
HAVING played cricket for far too long already, I have come to realise that runs on the board are worth just that little bit more.
Old Bert the farm labourer, when talking about captains, says: “When deciding whether to bat or bowl, if in doubt, think about, and still bat.”
He is probably right, chasing builds pressure and while it was the firsts’ turn a few weeks ago against Great Witchingham, this time it was the seconds’ turn to feel the heat.
From 131-2, chasing 160, they lost. No-one quite knows how as a few edges here and there would normally get you through, but something like seven wickets fell for 12 runs and with it any title aspirations.
In all honesty it may have halted the promotion chase altogether as now one of Copford or Melford need to lose both of their last games for us to be able to pip them into second.
At home the first team scored 210 off their 66 overs and built the pressure on last year’s champions, Cambridge Granta, with some good bowling and fielding, the visitors falling for just 100.
That is twice the firsts have beaten Granta this year, both times with below average totals, but runs on the board are worth just that little more when pressure starts to build.
Our heroic thirds finished their season in second place as Halstead, striving for safety, bolstered their team to earn an eight-wicket win.
In the end we were one point behind champions Tendring and Harry Wright and his men are looking forward to life in Division Six next year, while Alan Macdiarmid’s Sunday seconds kept their chances of promotion alive with a win against Melford. So this weekend is the penultimate one.
Although we have a home fixture on September 15, the clubhouse returns to the safe winter hands of the hockey club as of Monday, so this weekend sees the annual players dinner on Saturday evening including the website awards, such as most ducks, most balls faces, lowest strike rate and most times run out to add some amusement while we attempt to clear all stock behind Suzy’s bar.
The seconds play Copford at home on the same day when a win is simply the only option whilst Darren Batch will be looking towards performances up at Horsford ready for the Suffolk cup finals day on Sunday.
