Sudbury cricketers get their eye in

Sudbury Cricket Club's first winter nets session.

SUDBURY Cricket Club players got their eye in early at the weekend when they began training in the winter nets.

A very good turnout of players were at the training at Great Cornard Sports Centre at the upper school, where around 30 members from different teams and junior sections got to grips with bat and ball again.

It was the first of six nets sessions planned by the club, which will now take place each Sunday from 10am to noon until the season begins.

Last season, the first XI finished in a respectable mid-table position in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League where they were captained for the first time by prolific run scorer Darren Batch.

His vice captain for the coming season is Adam Mansfield.

Previous first XI captain Peter Siegert was at the first nets session, but this week told the Free Press that he is preparing to play for the second XI in 2012.

After 20 years he said he was finding match days a big commitment and was looking to join up with the second team, which will have Alistair Younger as its new captain.

However, said Siegert, he was quite prepared to play for the first XI if needed, but felt it would be looking to bring in younger players.

The first XI will have another team from Suffolk as opponents in 2012, with a side from Ipswich now in the league for the first time for many years.

Copdock and Old Ipswichian Cricket Club have been promoted to the top flight, taking the place of Norwich.
