Sudbury up to fourth after seeing off rivals Halstead

GIBBS DENLEY EAST ANGLIAN PREMIER LEAGUE

Subury 250-6 beat

Halstead 143 by 107 runs

HALSTEAD were put to the sword by local rivals Sudbury on Saturday, who moved up to fourth.

Sudbury skipper Darren Batch won the toss and opted to bat first on what looked like a good July track.

Chalking up Sudbury’s first 50 opening partnership of the season, Jay Phillips (31) and Pete Siegert (32) made a strong start, but the real onslaught was still to come for the Essex side.

Sri Lankan Hasantha Fernando and 17-year-old James Poulson (37) came to the crease and entertained the crowd with a superb stand of 96.

Fernando was the pick of the Sudbury batting line-up, hitting 14 fours and two sixes, including one that cleared the Halstead bar, for an inspiring 106.

Reaching the maximum batting points, Sudbury declared on an impressive 250-6 off 60 overs.

Any hopes Halstead might have had of staging a comeback at the crease were swiftly ended as Sudbury openers Jonny Gallagher and 18-year-old Matthew Hunn made an explosive start.

Goushi Raviendran was first to fall at the hands of Hunn, caught in slip by Nathan Poole, then Gallagher removed Daniel Sincuba and Neale Dakin in quick succession.

Halstead consolidated but the bowling change of Ben Hyett worked as he removed Mark Johnson for 20.

Hunn’s second spell was the highlight of the day as his sharp pace was just too much for the Halstead middle order.

He took four quick wickets, crashing into the stumps twice and drawing a brilliant one-handed catch from keeper Adam Mansfield.

Skipper Batch took the final two wickets to complete a 30 point victory, the score on 143.

Hunn finished with figures of 5-43, Batch 2-14 and Gallagher 2-26.

Sudbury travel to seventh-placed Saffron Walden on Saturday, while bottom side Halstead host second-bottom Great Witchingham at Star Stile (both 11am).
