Sudbury 180-8 lost to

Horsford 181-7 by three wickets

SUDBURY may have briefly regained their mojo last week, but they suffered yet another defeat in this penultimate game as their disappointing end-of-season run resumed – although a final fixture against relegated Halstead this Saturday could still see them end with a bang, not a whimper.

Skipper Darren Batch won the toss and opted to bat first on what looked like a hard track.

Horsford bowled extremely tight in the first 20 overs, restricting Sudbury with opening bowler Mike Warnes bowling 10 consecutive maidens.

Hasantha Fernando, Batch and 17-year-old James Poulson were the highlights of the innings with Poulson making his maiden Premier League half-century, scoring 62 before being stumped.

Batch made 38no and Fernando 30 before being caught.

Ben Reece made a quick-fire 20 at the close of the innings while supporting Batch before he was caught by a leaping Chris Brown at long-on.

Sudbury closed on 180-8 after 66 overs.

Horsford’s reply started well with Essex professional batsman Jaik Mickleburgh and Matt Spencer building a partnership that was eventually broken by Batch, caught behind off the glove.

Australian professionals Chris Sabburg (48) and James Wild (41) stole the show, but not before some tight bowling by Ben Hyett and Fernando.

Fernando bowled a superb final spell, taking three quick wickets to reduce Horsford to 174-7 and almost trapping Chris Lily pad before wicket, which would have made an enthralling finale.

Unfortunately Horsford held on and secured the win with 12 overs still remaining.

Fernando finished on figures of 3-49, Hyett 2-44 and Batch 1-37.
