Sudbury captain Batch hopes weather holds out for fixture

SUDBURY skipper Darren Batch is hoping for a change in the weather this weekend in time for the visit of Copdock and OI to Friars Street in the East Anglian Premier League.

Last week’s washout at Saffron Walden after just 12 overs was the fourth game Sudbury have lost to the weather this season, one third of their fixtures so far. “It’s disappointing, but we are getting used to it,” said Batch.

“Fortunately we are not scrapping around for points at the moment,” he said, “although that can always change.”

Batch has been looking at the weather forecast for Saturday, and he’s not optimistic. But with four players returning he’s hopeful that the Copdock fixture will go ahead.

Adam Mansfield, Matt Hunn, Jonny Gallagher and Ben Hyett are all available for selection again. “This will give us a stronger line-up than we had last week,” said Batch.

He paid tribute to the efforts of the groundsman at Saffron Walden. “He did a great job keeping the pitch dry after a downpour on Saturday, but sadly all his hard work was in vain.”

Copdock are just above Sudbury in the table, having completed the double over Bury last week. “That was a great win for them,” said Batch. “They are having a good first season.”

n Halstead are even further adrift at the foot of the table after a 94-run defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Great Witchingham at Star Stile last week.

Halstead started well, chasing Witchingham’s 254-4, but then collapsed, losing nine wickets for 42 runs. They travel to Burwell on Saturday still looking for a first win of the season.
