Halstead 172 lost to Saffron Walden 173-3 by seven wickets

HALSTEAD fell to a defeat on Saturday that all but condemned them to relegation from the East Anglian Premier League.

Batting first, they lost two wickets early on when Goush Raviendran (2) was bowled by Batcheler, then Neale Dakin (9) was caught in the slips by Batticciotto off of Sneath to leave Halstead at 12-2.

Josh Wells (36) made steady progress, however, Daniel Sincuba (10) was adjudged LBW with the scores on 31.

Wells and Freddie Preston (9) put on 30 for the fourth wicket, prior to Gale having Preston caught behind. Wells departed soon after, bowled by Gale, leaving Halstead at 76-5 with Bertie Blackwell (39) and Tom Philp (32) at the crease.

The pair batted through to lunch, both getting good starts, though neither was able to kick on and get a big score. They added 69 runs for the sixth wicket, before both fell to Gale.

Halstead then lost their last five wickets for just 28 runs, none of the remaining batsmen making double figures and Gale securing his five-wicket haul.

With a batting line-up as strong as Saffron Walden’s, defending 172 was always going to be a difficult ask for Halstead.

Sneath (13) retired not out, bringing in Glen Batticciotto (83no), he scored quickly, showing why he was in the Queensland set-up until 2010.

Preston bowled Laws (28), but this only brought in former pro Jason Gallian (24), who took the scores to 124-2 before he fell LBW to Rayner.

Rayner then accounted for Gale (0) but Walden romped to victory inside 37 overs.
