by eight wickets

HADLEIGH maintained their grip on top spot in Division Two with a comprehensive victory over struggling Brightlingsea on Saturday.

Despite losing the toss, Hadleigh captain Josh Davey was happy to bowl, particularly after recent weeks when he has seen his side dismiss teams for just 22 and 78.

The visitors were missing several regulars, and Kyle Tanner, James Gilderson and spinner Paul Budd were quick to exploit the batsmen’s frailties as wickets fell regularly.

Some poor shots, a suicidal run out and a superb catch behind the stumps by Tim Rix contributed to Brightlingsea’s woes.

Only J Gould could offer much resistance with 37, including some well executed reverse sweeps, but once he went Alex Milnes cleared up the tail with four wickets.

A total of 104 was never likely to be challenging, particularly as Brightlingsea’s resources were clearly thinner in the bowling than the batting department, and Hadleigh’s openers Davey (25) and Marlon Dias (48) took full advantage.

Ken Henry continued the onslaught, and struck a six to win the match.

After going to the top of the table last week Hadleigh now have a 27-point lead over third-placed Worlington with five games remaining.
