Former pro passes on his bowling skills

FORMER Essex and Nottinghamshire paceman Ian Pont ran a one-day coaching workshop for the junior members of Halstead Cricket Club Youth section.

Eighteen youngsters, aged between 12 and 19 years old attended the bowling clinic and spent the day learning more about the techniques of pace and spin bowling and the biomechanics of bowling actions.

Each player saw themselves on a screen at last Wednesday’s event, with video analysis conducted to improve their technique as well as seeing their speed monitored by the ‘bowling gun’.

Club chairman, Mark Surridge, one of the assistant coaches present, was enthusiastic about the immediate response from those attending the clinic with performances reflecting what they had learnt in club matches in the weekend following.

“Three of our junior pace bowlers, Tristan Blackledge, Joe Morris and Freddie Statham, have all improved markedly and in matches at Coggeshall on Saturday, and Kelvedon on Sunday they proved quite a handful in adult cricket, bowling a combined total of 30 overs and taking between them 5–75, which makes for very encouraging reading,” he said.

Halstead’s first team are 102 points adrift at the bottom of the East Anglian Premier League after a seven-wicket defeat at home to Saffron Walden on Saturday, with a trip to Copdock and  Old Ipswichians this Saturday (11am).

But Surridge believes the future of the club is bright as long as new talent is being nutured through the ranks.

“Although the results this season haven’t gone our way Halstead has a thriving colts section and we are now seeing several of our younger players breaking into adult cricket where they have not been overawed by the demands made upon them,” he said.
