Hadleigh captain Josh Davey described Saturday’s home win over second-placed Mistley as their best performance of the season.

With rain predicted for the afternoon, both captains agreed to reduce the match to 40 overs per side.

Mistley won what seemed a crucial toss and decided to bowl first, but Hadleigh got off to a flyer with Marlon Dias hitting Mistley’s opening bowlers to all parts.

Early momentum enabled Hadleigh to build some strong partnerships and set a platform for the middle-order to attack in the last 10 overs.

Dias scored an excellently-paced century — his second ever for Hadleigh — with the support of overseas professional Luke Ibbs (38) and Tom Piddington who passed a half-century.

Wickets in hand allowed Kyle Tanner to give the opposition some lethal blows (28no). Hadleigh were happy with their performance with the bat and were very confident at tea that they could beat high-flying Mistley.

As expected, Mistley’s openers came out with real intent — after 10 overs the visitors were on more than 70 runs for the loss of no wickets.

The pressure applied by Hadleigh’s huge total, combined with the need for Mistley’s batsmen to play so positively, meant it was a matter of time before a chance would go to hand.

A well-taken catch by wicketkeeper Danny Rock opened Hadleigh’s account.

The bowling partnership between Piddington and Ibbs took the game away from Mistley as wickets began to tumble frequently and Ibbs finished with a career-best five-wicket haul.

A delighted Davey said: “Saturday’s game against Mistley was probably our best all-round performance in Division One so far.

“We adapted well to the reduced format and played very clever and positive cricket.

“I was particularly pleased to see how coolly the boys responded to Mistley’s initial response with the bat.”
