Tommy Perry, mid-week hat-trick scorer with the under-18s, twisted his ankle in the warm-up, and had to be replaced on the Melford bench by 16-year-old Tom Miller.
The first half of this FA Vase tie was pretty even with neither side able to turn opportunities into goals.
Croll collecting a swirling shot from Rogers well, and Durell headed clear a dangerous cross from McElroy. At the other end Bull's shot
on the turn went over the bar.
Knight headed just wide for St Neots and Okechuckwu fired in a good effort which Croll collected at the foot of the post. Croll then superbly kept out a low hard free kick from Rogers.
Despite the visitors being more fluent, Melford continued to fight hard. Bull played in Brind, whose shot grazed the bar with keeper Chatfield well beaten.
Croll pushed the ball onto the bar following a corner, and Heaton cleared the follow-up effort off the line. Just before the interval Heaton whipped in the ball to the unmarked Crissell and he hooked the ball into the chest of Chatfield.
From the resultant clearance the ball found Dyett completely unmarked in the Melford box but he sliced his shot wide.
Potter found space but his hurriedly-taken shot was collected comfortably by Chatfield at the start of the second half, but the visitors started to take a grip on the game.
Within minutes Croll saved at full stretch from Eno, then Bannister headed wide of an open goal and McElroy shot into the side netting.
The introduction of the St Neots substitutes provided the key to their victory. On 77 minutes, substitute Hall found Bannister, who worked along the Melford line, and fired low into the net from just outside the box.
Melford came back with efforts from Bull and Potter, but on 84 minutes Hall found space down the left flank, and his perfect cross the far post was headed home by fellow substitute Steele.
