CORNARD United celebrated a 2-0 victory over Wisbech in the first round of the FA Vase on Saturday, although until shortly before the start there was no sign of the match officials.
The three officials travelled together from Norwich, using satnav, but instead of putting the Blackhouse Lane postcode in, they entered the postcode on the match confirmation letter from manager Chris Symes, which had his home address, and ended up i
n Colchester.

"They told me I had a very nice house," said Symes. "I was bemused as to how they knew until they explained what had happened.

"When you have been a manager/secretary for 30 years you think you have seen everything. But every so often the game throws up surprises."

Cornard, having done their homework on Wisbech, took a first half lead through Danny Price straight from a corner. Wisbech missed a sitter soon afterwards. "That was the turning point," said Symes.

Callum Aves volleyed home the second from Kurt Waterfield's long throw, and Cornard will now travel to Wivenhoe in the second round on November 15.

Cornard have re-signed Ritchie Meadows, who is back in Britain after a year spent travelling round the world.

He was in the squad for last night's league game at Stowmarket and will be in the squad for Saturday's home Suffolk Senior Cup tie against SIL Stowupland Falcons (2.15pm).

"Cups are giving us a lift at present," said Symes. "I hope it continues on Saturday."

Long Melford and Hadleigh both went out of the Vase, but this weekend, like Cornard, their attentions are focused on the Senior Cup.

Melford host Anglian Combination Beccles Town while Hadleigh visit SIL Crane Sports.

The draw has been made for the second round, to be played on November 22. It includes: Long Melford or Beccles v Westerfield, Cornard or Stowupland v Capel Plough; St Johns v Crane or Hadleigh.

Halstead Town, who also went out of the Vase on Saturday, are back in Ridgeons League first division action, visiting leaders Newmarket Town.
