BECCLES fully deserved their Suffolk Senior Cup victory, against a lacklustre and at times a poor Melford team. Strikers Remblance and Woods were always a problem for Melford while in defence Wing was dominant and dealt easily with the little threat from the home attack.
The game opened with Remblance twice coming close, firstly scuffing his shot then having the next effort blocked. The speed of Woods and hard running and determination of Remblance constantly threatened, and only a last-ditch tackle by Arron denied
Woods.
Aaron was injured in the tackle, so Melford were forced to reorganise. Beccles almost took advantage, Croll pushing out a corner from Woods, but Remblance volleyed the rebound wide.
It was no surprise when Melford went behind, a defensive error allowing Woods to race away and chip the ball wide of the advancing Croll.
The home team wasted good chances. Delves was through on goal but lost control and Cable dived to save at his feet; a ball from Heaton found Kenyon, who failed to lob the advancing keeper; and Perry saw a shot was cleared off the line.
If the first half was poor for Melford then the second was even less impressive. For the opening five minutes Melford applied pressure and tried to get back into the game.
But Beccles created further chances, Day heading wide of an open goal and the lively Remblance having two shots saved by Croll.
It was a miserable day for Melford, who began to look both tired and short of ideas, and the visitors piled on the agony. On 78 minutes Remblance was gifted the ball by the Melford defence and ran unchallenged into the Melford box to fire past Croll.
In the dying minutes Hurren found space down the right, and his cross was pushed away by Croll, but straight to Remblance who headed home from close range.
Long Melford: Croll; Arron (Kenyon 26), Grimster (Millar 79), Heaton (B Simpson 76), Adams, Durell, Delves, Raby, Perry, Chisholm, French.
