TONIGHT'S Sudbury and District League Handicap Cup final will be between Lavenham Royal British Legion B and Haverhill after both recorded 4-1 semi-final victories on neutral tables.
Haverhill secured their final place with victory against Halstead. Their victory was much closer than the score suggests with two of the frames being decided on the final black.
Halstead's lone win came in the opening frame where, with the scores
almost level and four balls remaining, Aden Kench cleared up to secure victory against Andy Rushforth.
In the next frame Halstead's Colin Ballard took some time to get going against Andy Pordage.
But with just the colours remaining the Halstead player looked set for victory with a clearance, but the black failed to drop, giving his opponent an easy pot to level the scores.
The third frame was a real nail-biter between two evenly handicapped cuemen, Halstead's Wayne Mortier and Haverhill's recently-crowned singles champions Dick Lee. It was Lee who took the honours on the black, the only time he was in front.
Although trailing 2-1 in frames Halstead had a slight aggregate points advantage going into the final frame, but it was to no avail as Haverhill's Chris Pordage ran out a comfortable 37 points winner against Robert Evans to clinch success for his side.
There was always going to be a team from Lavenham Royal British Legion in the final as the other semi was contested between their A and B sides. That too was a close-run affair.
Glen Avery got the B side off to a winning start with victory against Richard Howe. It was all square after the next after Paul Garrard saw off the challenge of Michael Hazell.
Dale Gridley potted well in the next to put the B side 2-1 ahead on frames, and 37 points up on aggregate, with victory against Peter Sturgeon.
The points difference proved to be too much for the A side in the final frame where, with just two balls remaining, John Goodchild conceded to give victory to John Hynard.
Tonight's final will take place at Long Melford Working Men's Club starting at 8pm.
