Jenny Spencer, pictured left, had a successful European Junior Rowing Championship in Cork at the weekend, winning both her sculling events.
Saturday's race, rowed in a very strong tail wind, saw the Sudbury club member against competitors from Spain and The Netherlands. Taking the lead off the start, she finished the 2000m course 27 seconds ahead of The Netherlands.
On Sunday in the 2000m she raced against France and Switzerland as well as The Netherlands and Spain, in calmer conditions with a lighter tail wind.
She rowed to victory in 8min 18sec, beating the previous day's time by five seconds – this being despite most other races of the day being slower. France finished second in 8.35.
On Friday Spencer, 17, was called into the eight to replace an injured rower, but with two other changes in the crew due to injury and illness, Great Britain struggled off the start.
They then settled into a rhythm and although a strong finish saw them gaining ground on the leaders, they finished in fifth place, only 0.9 of a second off the bronze medal.
The results over the three days in both the boys and girls events saw Great Britain winning the overall trophy ahead of France and last year's winners Italy.
