Pacy Haverhill frontman Neil Cogger could be playing at King's Marsh this season.
The skilful former Cambridge City striker this week continued pre-season training with Nicky Smith's side.

And the AFC manager admits he would be a good signing.

Smith said: "He is a player I very much like and would look at playing wide left.

"He has a lot of pace and he scores goals."

Cogger netted 10 times in 16 games during his last spell at Haverhill Rovers. Since 2001 he has scored 49 in 84 appearances.

But Cogger must first prove his fitness after two serious knee injuries in three years.

Smith added: "He has come to have look at us and we have been having a look at him, but he is coming back from injury."

Smith is also running the rule over a handful of triallists this week, including players from Wycombe Wanderers and Charlton.

Several players are still to join the squad, including striker James Rowe, who is expected back from the United States by tomorrow, and should sign a new deal.

Rowe is expected to play a part in Saturday's home friendly against Dagenham & Redbridge (3pm).

Smith has a doubt over goalkeeper Paul Catley, who suffered a groin strain 10 minutes into Tuesday night's reserve friendly at Cornard United.

Pre-season friendlies started on Monday with a 1-1 draw at Long Melford.

There was a new look for AFC, with Gareth Heath the only regular from last season, in the starting XI.

The match looked to be heading for 0-0 until Danny Stokes nodded home Danny Shipton's left-wing cross five minutes from time.

Carl Daw netted Melford's last-minute equaliser from Danny Manser's left-wing cross.

Smith said: "There were a lot of positives to come out of Monday night, given that the players have never played together before. The fitness of the squad was very good."

The game against League Two outfit Dagenham & Redbridge is followed by a visit from Wroxham on Tuesday (7.45pm).

  • AFC begin their Southern League campaign at Malvern Town – which at 201 miles is the longest trip they face in the league. A coach will be running for supporters. It will cost £10 a ticket, reflecting higher transport costs.

  • AFC Gold Week 11 winners: £100, J Crosbie (302), Humphrey Road, Sudbury; £10, Mrs M Davis (389), The Close, Sudbury; £10, R Reed (475), Waltham Road, Boreham.

  • Long Melford entertain Grundisburgh on Saturday in a double-header, the first team kicking off at 2pm and the reserves at 4pm.
