Freddie is in his third season of competing, as is brother Robert, 14. Their father Gary competed in motocross, and grandfather Peter Haylock is now back riding competitively after a lengthy spell away from the sport.

The brothers, from Newton Green, are both members of the East Anglian Schoolboys Scramble Club and the Norwich and District MCC, and do most of their riding in East Anglia.

Both have picked up a number of club trophies, but Freddie's three straight wins at East Tracks, King's Lynn, giving him maximum points in class, was a first outright victory.

Freddie rides in the 50cc auto group, and Robert in the 85cc, where he comes up against riders two years older.

"They picked up a love of motorcycles from my father," said mum Sally. "He gave up riding when he had children, but has since gone back to the sport.

"Gary used to ride, but he gave up when we had the boys. He'll probably go back to it when they have grown up."

Gary's job these days is as the family mechanic, working on the bikes at the tracks or at home ready for the next meeting.

Meetings at the weekend are a family affair. The family has a large mobile home, and all the gear and bikes are packed in by the boys ready for Gary to drive them to the venue for the Sunday races.

They stay overnight, with the brothers getting up early to get everything ready for scrutineering. "I let them do that," said Gary, who welcomes the opportunity of a lie-in on Sunday morning.

"It's great for the family," said Sally. "It gives the family time together, and the boys thoroughly enjoy being away at weekends and meeting people."
