Sudbury got their home league campaign off to a perfect start with a comfortable win against the students.
The opening exchanges were even, with both sides having good amounts of possession but never really threatening in the final quarter of the pitch. For the hosts, skipper Simon Cardy made several telling interceptions in front of the back line.
The
deadlock was broken after 20 minutes when Leigh Bevan continued his good scoring start to the season by touching home a penalty corner from close-range.
Bevan soon doubled his total when Sudbury stole the ball on the halfway line and Ed Griffiths, who had an excellent game, drove into the circle and drew the keeper before unselfishly squaring the ball to Bevan to sweep home.
This gave Sudbury the cushion they needed but they were guilty at times of giving the ball away. Thankfully this was not done in any real danger areas.
The game was effectively made safe before half-time when Sudbury launched a speedy attack from their own half and the evergreen Nick Thorpe galloped the length of the pitch from left back to receive a pass in the circle and slot home from a very acute angle.
Unsurprisingly, the second half proved to be somewhat of a non-event, which is exactly what Sudbury wanted.
Several chances went begging up front but at the back they looked very solid, with Andy Stopps having to make only one save of any real note during the entire game.
This win sets Sudbury up well for their visit to Cambridge City this weekend.
