The annual speed judging competition, utilising the lanes around the village of Hawkedon, took place on a gloriously sunny day, with 18 riders taking part, predominantly from Cycle Club Sudbury and Haverhill Wheelers.
Riders are timed around a pre-set course, a lap in one direction, then re-tracking in the opposite direction for the second lap.
Each lap is timed and the aim is to try to get the times as close as possible to each other. With no timing devices allowed for the riders and being over a hilly course, it made riding at a constant speed for both laps much more difficult.
Surprisingly, the winner, Ben Mickleburgh from the Haverhill club, almost pulled off the perfect result by having just one second difference between each lap. Colin Dales (CCS), at just three seconds difference and Pip Grainge (HW) at four seconds, must have felt they had done enough to win.
The team competition was narrowly won by Haverhill Wheelers with 229 points to C.C.S's 226.
The next event will be the interclub hill climb at Dalham on October 19.
