Elmswell 162

Cavendish Wanderers 165-6

After rain forced a week's break, the Cavendish team took to the field looking to extend their lead at the top of the table at the expense of visitors Elmswell. A quick scramble to organ
ise teas meant the game started a little late but it was worth the wait, with J Burton taking a wicket in his first over.

From the other end, E Burton kept the pressure on the away team with a controlled spell of bowling. The quick hands of Skelton brought about the second dismissal, and when Gilbert was introduced in to the attack the wickets soon started to tumble.

Some tight bowling and good fielding from the Cavendish boys had kept Elmswell to 86 off 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets. E Burton picked up three in his spell, and Stacy Gilbert finished with fine figures of 2-33 in ten overs.

But Elmswell were not done yet, and the experienced pair N Greathead and man-of-the-match D Reed set about a rebuilding job. Cavendish eventually got the breakthrough they needed when Kevis had Greathead caught for a well-played 35.

The innings was wrapped up with a wicket for N Burton and a good run out by Rob Finch, Elmswell finishing with 162 all out in 38 overs.

In the absence of Adams, working in Tokyo for a month, Gilbert joined J Burton in the opening partnership and the pair got off to a fine start. They had raced to 35 within four overs before Burton fell in a very unusual manner.

Sweeping the ball to leg, the ball struck the square leg umpire on the full before looping in to the hands of the awaiting fielder. Much debate ensued as to the legitimacy of the wicket, but it was clear that Burton had to go.

This bought Skelton to the wicket , and he whipped a quickfire 11 before being caught in the deep. It was Tatum's turn to join Gilbert at the crease and a fine partnership followed before Gilbert was caught having notched up a classy 38.

Then came the arrival of skipper Alasdair Carnegie who looked to play his usual array of long-handled swipes. Runs were starting to flow and the score passed 100 before suicidal running from the captain saw the unfortunate Tatum, who was looking comfortable as ever at the crease, run out for 35.

E Burton came and went, running himself out for two, and then it was King's turn to have a go. Carnegie was eventually caught after hitting a rapid 40 and this left King and Finch to finish the job, Cavendish reaching the target of 162 with four wickets and six overs to spare.

D Reed bowled well for Elmswell, taking two wickets for 16 runs off his ten overs This was another fine win for Cavendish, who will look to push on against Stowmarket on Sunday.
