SUDBURY had a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Maldon in Two Counties division nine, winning with seven overs to spare.
Maldon won the toss and decided to bat on a flat wicket that gave the bowlers little assistance. Charlie Phillips removed Sims early but then wickets were slow coming until the introduction of Roger Troughton and Martyn Waterfall.
The visitors sta
rted to hit the ball to hand and, after dropping some chances, Sudbury started taking catches, one by 12-year-old Jack Beaumont making good distance to hold on near the ground.
The experienced Whitehart was brought back at the death, after tweaking a back muscle earlier, to take two late wickets, earning Sudbury another bonus point.
The Sudbury reply started off at a reasonable rate with skipper Andy Holness and 17-year-old Chris Titterington scoring at more than five an over from the start, and maintaining that rate until Holness was dismissed with the score on 132.
This brought 13-year-old James Poulson to the crease. Titterington, who was making only his second appearance of the season, scored his maiden half-century for the club at senior level before he was dismissed for 89.
Poulson was then joined by the experienced Phillips, a last-minute replacement following call-ups taking original selections away, and Sudbury reached their target comfortably.
