It was 20/20 on Saturday night down the club. It was a big evening with Jon Kent's last Saturday, the first team winning at Wivenhoe and the seconds winning a thriller at home to Dunmow. Andy Holness' side fell just a bit short at Kesgrave, but that didn't dampen the very high spirits.
I had a nice trip to the lovely Wivenhoe quayside spot of lunch and then up to watch the first team. When I turned up the teams were walking off as Sudbury had bowled Wivenhoe out for 107, great effort against a dangerous Wivenhoe side that is capab
le of runs.

Billy Moulton-Day took four wickets, super Andy Simmons another three to add to his tally, and the superb Kent another three wickets in his final bowling performance of the season.

He did himself out of the opportunity to score 1,000 league runs as there were not enough runs to chase... but that didn't matter.

Jay Phillips, having a great second half of the season, looked quality before falling lbw. Reece hit a couple of nice fours then got out to limber up for his time in the bar. Ben Barnett – the find of the season, thanks Guy – knocked the runs off with Kent.

Kent's innings was superb. There was no answer to him, and the best batsmen I have ever seen in the Two Counties signed off with strokes that everyone would have paid money to see.

All the top sides won at weekend apart from Frinton, so reality is that second spot can be achieved Saturday, which may also get us back in the East Anglian Premier League play offs. To achieve this Copdock and Frinton need to lose and we need to beat Mildenhall at Friars Street.

It's possible and we have to be positive and go for it on Saturday. It's going to be tough as Kent is back in South Africa and Moulton-Day will be at Lord's bowling at the England players in the nets ready for the one-day international on Sunday.

The second team round the season off with the long trip to Clacton, a season of what might have been. After beating Dunmow on Saturday, who are top, it just goes to show had we not lost by 1 run at Dunmow and tied against Stowmarket promotion might have been in our grasp.

It bodes well for next season as I feel that will see us get back to division three. Being 90-8 chasing 155, the money were on the league leaders. But Tom Lockwood 40 and Alan Macdiarmid saw the guys home to start the party.

The two of them did great. Lockwood has had a great season. We have been lucky to have him on Saturdays, and we have missed him for many years, and Macdiarmid is finishing strong.

The team celebrated with cod and chips. An administrative error meant the tea lady was not in town. But no-one was complaining.

The thirds lost at Kesgrave. Bowling first Sudbury had them 3-3, Ivan Whitehart and Charlie Thomas doing early damage. Great to see Thomas back from injury. We have missed him.

Whitehart did well, taking three wickets. It was a good weekend for him as he is a grandad. Congratulations from the club to Stuart and Lauren Whitehart on the birth of baby Isobel.

The last grandad player we have was Dave Witham when he made his first team comeback appearance at Easton a couple of years ago.

Phil Halliday produced excellent figures of 3-15 and Kesgrave left a target of 175 for Sudbury.
