Tribute to Keith Martin

IN 1969 I worked with another young guy as a truck driver for a haulage firm in Hedingham. One Saturday morning, this guy asked me for a lift to Sudbury. He had packed in his job, had no car and very little money. I willingly obliged as we were workmates.
Coming into Sudbury down Ballingdon Hill, I turned to this young man and asked: "What are you going to do now?"
He replied: "I think I'll go into the building trade."
This young man was my friend Keith Martin, who tragically passed away recently.
What I should have said was: "I'll come with you," but I stayed a truck driver, and Keith went on to make his fortune.
To me, Keith and others like him who have succeeded in business in the Sudbury area should be role models for the youth of today. Work hard and persevere at your chosen vocation and, hopefully, you'll succeed as well.
Some people didn't like Keith for his straightforward talking and because he didn't suffer fools or lazy people gladly, but this was what made the man who he was.
