Some of your readers may not know that Sudbury was the source of an even more famous length of fabric than the First Lady's dress (and well done Vanners!) in terms of American history.
At the 200th anniversary of its independence, huge efforts were made to establish the origins of the oldest American flag, which dated from that dramatic time. Lo and behold, it proved to be from a workshop in Cross Street, if my memory serves me. At that time flags and ships' bunting (including, no doubt, "England expects…") kept Sudbury weaving going.
It is all very appropriate, since the dear old town was the epicentre of the key emigrations between 1630 (Winthrop et al) and our civil war.
