Fashion victims
I became worried for the town's pubs after reading the Free Press article on the trio of young teenagers who went about asking townsfolk what improvements they would like to see around Sudbury. The suggestion that there are too many pubs and not enough men's and women's clothes shops completely stunned me.
Is this an example of what we are becoming? The way I see it, Sudbury is fast becoming homogenised and bland with chain stores, and recently chain pubs and chain food restaurants, which have no interest in the community or local economy. If anything, we need more independently-owned, family-friendly pubs and fewer shops – maybe this would bring the community of Sudbury closer together, instead of giving in to the alienation of communities, modern consumerism and an overindulgence in clothes. Maybe it’s just me, but I do not look forward to a world in which we would rather shop for clothes than socialise in a pub.
Saying that, I hand it to the teenagers who did get out there and ask the community what they wanted, out of their own interest. How about a survey of some local pubs, asking the landlords what they think to having their pub turned into a chain clothes shop such as New Look or Burtons?
