Kind-hearted youngsters from a Sudbury-based youth charity are giving up their bank holiday to help others in the town.
Members of the Eden's Project youth centre in Gainsborough Street, will clean the town's streets, promote crime awareness and take part in conservation work on the River Stour this weekend.

Mike Maidment, project manager, said: "They are giving up their free time to do this and will be completing a variety of tasks over this bank holiday weekend, including litter picking on Saturday and going into schools around the area on Monday to do any odd jobs."

The youngsters will also be in the town centre on Saturday handing out leaflets giving advice on how to keep purses safe while out shopping.

Wearing reflective jackets bearing the name of the Babergh Crime Reduction panel the youths will be checking cars parked to see if any valuables are left on show and, if they find any, they will fill out a form detailing the car and where it was parked and take this to the police station.

Police will then send the car owner a letter advising them the stuff could have been a potential target for thieves.

Forty-seven-year-old Steven Binks, from Bulmer, was so impressed with what the youngsters are doing he has agreed to a gruelling 168- mile bike ride along the Norfolk coast to raise money for the charity.

He said: "People say youths are smashing up windows because there is nothing to do, well there is. I know lots of youths in Bures who use the Eden's Project, and even people who travel from Nayland to use the centre in Sudbury."

Anyone interested in sponsoring Steven should contact him on 01787 228105.

The Eden's Project is open to upper school age young people, and offers facilities which include a cafe zone, pool table and access to computers and the internet.

The Eden's Project is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm when admission is free with a membership card, and Fridays and Saturdays from 7.30pm to 10pm where entry is 50p with a membership card or £1 without one.
