I’m writing to say how sorry I was to hear that bus routes around Sudbury are to be cut.
In Clacton, where I live, most of the buses are run by private companies but are funded by Essex County Council.
An hourly service is the very best we get but some villages don’t even get a single daily journey into Clacton and back.
It’s a terrible situation if you live in a small village without your own transport and you have to rely on public transport.
My own journey to and from Manningtree is a two-hour service which I do about once a month.
If I miss a bus by five or 10 minutes on my return, I face a long wait for the next one.
This problem has come about because of the Government’s policy towards public transport and free bus passes for the over 60s.
County councils pay the private bus companies as little as 20p a journey for these people – and the reality is that the bus companies can’t make it pay with such a low return.
What a terrible mess, and things are only going to get worse.
P.s Keep up the good work. The Free Press is the best local paper around – I buy it religiously every week.
