In this area of Suffolk, many of the fire crews are retained.

This means the firefighters live or work within four minutes of the station and respond by a pager when an emergency occurs.

My local fire station, in Clare, is a retained station with many of the firefighters working and living in the town. I have seen for myself, when they get alerted to an incident, the struggle some of them face getting through the center of town to the fire station.

Despite them having headlights on, signs in the windscreens and, in some cases, horns hooting, members of the public fail to pull over allowing them to get to the station.

When you are driving near to Clare fire station, or indeed Long Melford, which is also retained and in the middle of the busy village, take care and always look out for the firefighters as they may be coming to you one day.
