POLICE say plans are in place to combat a rise in metal thefts.
Last month, five properties on Hadleigh’s Lady Lane industrial estate were targeted by thieves.
The incidents have promoted calls for more measures to be taken to prevent such crime, with Suffolk Police pledging to step up Operation Tornado.
This involves police working with British Transport Police, HMRC and the Environment Agency to reduce the sale of stolen scrap metal. The scheme has already been used in forces across the country.
A spokesman for Suffolk Police said officers were visiting scrap dealers to make them aware of the initiative and to stop metal theft, which has been on the increase.
“We will be checking yards regularly and those who are not participating will be the focus of enforcement work,” he said.
