MORE than 60 years after the end of the Second World War was announced, a Great Cornard pub held a “Victory in Europe” weekend.
The event, which saw the 1940s return to The Five Bells in Bures Road, was organised by landlords Wendy and Bob Hedley to raise funds for the Headley Court rehabilitation centre and Help for Heroes.
A total of £800 was raised during the weekend, which was running for the fifth year and featured a number of military vehicles and a firing range.
“We had a fantastic weekend and would like to thank everyone who came along and all those who donated,” said Mrs Hedley.
“The whole event was very enjoyable and we always get a good attendance as we have quite a few war veterans who drink here.”
Among the vehicles on display were an eight-wheel American troop lorry, a motorbike and sidecar with a machine gun and British and American Jeeps.
Mrs Hedley added that the pub was hoping to beat the £2,500 raised for charity last year.
The pub will be holding jubilee celebrations, a royal quiz and a garden party with St Andrew’s Church in the coming weeks.
