Three fire tenders from Bury St Edmunds initially attended the Water Lane blaze but this was increased to 13 as firefighters dealt with the incident.

Meanwhile tenders from Long Melford, Bury St Edmunds, Elmswell and Ixworth were at another blaze at Cocks Green Lane. This was over shortly after 3pm while the Water Lane blaze was under control just after 3.30pm.

The appliance from Long Melford was damaged when the fire spread beneath it. A fires service spokesman said the vehicle’s underside and wheelarch were damaged and temporary repairs were made in the field so it could be driven to their workshops in Ipswich.

A spare appliance has been sent to Long Melford to maintain cover.
