THE chance to learn some handy restoration techniques for repairing treasured floor coverings, such as oriental or Persian rugs, is being offered in Long Melford over the next few weeks, writes Anne Wise.
A number of restoration study days and workshops are being held in the village as part of a rug festival running from Saturday to November 12. The festival includes genuine nomadic tents, with rugs, textiles and tribal objects.
Guest speakers include the head of the carpet department of the auctioneers Bonhams – who is donating the proceeds of his workshop on November 3 to Macmillan Cancer Research – and rug maker Richard Mathias, who is donating the proceeds of his talk on November 9 to Goodweave UK, an international charity working to end the exploitation of children in the rug industry of South Asia.
The festival is the idea of Sara Barber, from the Persian Carpet Studio based at The Old White Hart in Long Melford. She has organised the event to mark her 20 years in business in the village.
