A WELL-KNOWN Bures man, who died in a two-car crash, had just been to help a friend who had run out of petrol.
John Handley, 54, died after his red Suzuki Wagon was in collision with a silver Audi A4 on the B1508 Bures Road in West Bergholt at 5.20pm on Sunday.
John Donnelly, the landlord of the Swan Inn Pub in Bures, where Mr Handley had been working, revealed the tragic story behind his death.
“I actually passed him on the road as he was driving towards Colchester,” he said.
“He was going to help a friend from the village who had run out of petrol and was on his way back when the accident happened.”
Pat Mulcahy, the landlady of the Three Horseshoes Pub, said the village “would not be the same” without Mr Handley, who managed the pub’s football team and was a regular at the pub.
She said: “He was an extraordinarily kind man who would help everyone out whenever they needed it.”
A 32-year-old man from Colchester was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
