UPDATE: Homes in West Suffolk hit by flooding after heavy rain

Homes in West Suffolk villages were hit by severe flooding following yesterday’s heavy rain.

The flash flooding struck the Little Whelnetham, Sicklesmere, Bradfield St George and Stanningfield area and the A134 was shut.

Firefighters were called at 6.54pm to a cottage, in Chapel Road, Stanningfield, which was flooded by 1ft of water.

The two crews pumped the water out of the property and the incident was under control by 9.17pm.

At 5.19pm, fire crews were called to three properties hit by flooding, in Sudbury Road, Little Whelnetham - one of which was flooded with 2ft of water.

A further 11 properties in the Sicklesmere area were deemed to be at risk.

Crews supported the Environment Agency at the scene up until 10.30pm.

The Environment Agency is due to attend the area today to assess the situation and sandbags are being provided if required.

Suffolk Police received reports that a bank in Little Whelnetham had collapsed due to the volume of water which flooded Bury Road.

They also recieved a call about 2ft of water in Prospect View, Lavenham.

More heavy rain is forecast for Suffolk today.
