DRASTIC changes need to be introduced to halt an alarming downward trend of trade in Sudbury, according to the town’s retailers.
Since the beginning of the year, town businesses have experienced a worrying slide in the number of shoppers, with the decline in footfall triggering shop closures and forcing other businesses to reduce opening hours.
Retailers feel the time has now come to introduce measures to reverse the trend – before it is too late.
Dave Blackerry, owner of Sudbury Sports and Leisurewear in North Street – an area which has been badly affected – said he believed trade had fallen dramatically in the last few months.
“Since November, I’ve probably seen a fall in footfall of about 30 per cent,” he said.
“With more shops closing, people are just not coming into town.”
