Singer-songwriter Steve Harley has seen one of his most famous songs re-enter the charts after a campaign by TV programme Top Gear.

Harley, who lives in the Belchamps, has seen his track Make Me Smile enter the iTunes top 30 this week after the star, best known for his work with the 1970s rock group Cockney Rebel, was supported by the BBC2 flagship show.

Presenter Jeremy Clarkson pleaded with fans to download the track to support the fictional ‘make me smile’ foundation after Harley was caught speeding and fined £1,000 earlier in the year.

Clarkson added that sales from the track could help other road users caught by new controversial speed cameras.

Harley tweeted: “Thanks Jeremy Clarkson for kicking off the #makemesmilefoundation, more than happy to subsidise the poor sods who drive down Swanley Way.”
