Joe McLennan, 24, and his partner Naomi Mayes, 20, decided to take on the ‘End to End’ fundraiser for Miss Mayes’ terminally-ill grandfather.

“We had talked about doing a road trip and we said ‘why don’t we help a charity out as well?’,” said Mr McLennan.

Searching through different charities the pair found the National Association for Bikers with a Disability, the World’s leading support group for motorcyclists who suffer disabilities due to accident, illness or genetic conditions.

The charity supports riders by campaigning for them to be able to ride their bike if they lose their licence and by modifying bikes for free.

“It was really nice to support a charity that is little known and that is something really personal,” said Mr McLennan, who is a chef.

The couple, who both grew up in Sudbury but recently moved to Colchester, set off on Saturday night to get to Land’s End, giving themselves one week to then make it to the most northerly tip of Great Britain.

Forced to stay off the motorways because of the size of their bikes, the couple will be riding for nearly 2,000 miles.

“I hope my bike doesn’t give up,” said Mr McLennan before leaving.

“My bike [a Lexmoto Vixen] is only a year and a half old, Naomi’s [a Jinlun Lifan] is six-years-old, but both have had MOTs.

“Bikes are fickle, it only take a little thing, but fingers crossed they hold out.”

He said the pair were both looking forward to the journey, hoping to raise as much as possible for the charity.

His biggest concern was getting a sore bum.

Other issues include the practicality of getting from one end of the country to the other without using motorways and remembering the route.

Luckily the accommodation is all sorted with friends and family offering beds for most of the nights.

On the way the pair will be visiting the NABD rally in Chelford, Cheshire, celebrating the charity’s 25th anniversary.

So far the couple have raised more than £500 of their £1,000 target.
