STAFF from Ipswich Building Society’s Sudbury and Hadleigh branches joined colleagues on a 38-mile sponsored walk.

Sudbury assistant branch manager Wayne Hurrell, 42, from Long Melford, and Alex Deal, 19, a customer advisor at Hadleigh, set off on the marathon trek from the firm’s Haverhill branch at 9am on Friday to raise funds for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Joined by Kevin Davies, Lester Blake, Ben Cousins and Paul Millar, they eventually crossed the finish line at the Ipswich branch at 3.30pm on Saturday, following an over-night stop-off.

Mr Hurrell said: “It was quite painful, with most people getting some blisters. Friday was a very hot day, but we struggled through and everyone did fantastically well.”

The group undertook the challenge as part of the Towergate Accumulator challenge, in which 49 businesses from the region compete to turn £50 into as much money as possible for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

So far, the colleagues have raised £1,363, which will be matched by a donation from the company.

“We are extremely happy with the amount we’ve raised,” said Mr Hurrell. “We originally set ourselves a target of £1,000, so it has gone brilliantly and we are very happy.”
