A LONDON Marathon runner has described her tears of joy after her fiance’s surprise proposal at the finish line.
Katie Harvey, 19, from Rye Lane in Sudbury, had overcome a troublesome knee injury to complete her first ever 26.2-mile run through the capital in just over four-and-a-half hours when her boyfriend Aaron Keeble, 20, popped the question.
“I was absolutely knackered,” said Katie, a trainee manager at Waitrose in Sudbury. “I got across the line and about 20 minutes later I met up with everyone.”
Joined by Katie’s parents Glen and Deb, brother David and best friend Bethany Parsons, and Aaron’s mum Shirley Keeble-Fox in St James’ Park, accountant Aaron had a novel approach to proposing.
“I had said if she ran it in over four hours then she would have to walk home to spur her on,” he said. “So Katie asked if she still had to, and I replied: ‘That depends on if you say yes or not’ and got down on one knee.”
The exhaustion of her efforts and the emotion of the situation was all too much for Katie, who has been with Aaron for around six years. Luckily for him, Katie managed to give the answer he was looking for.
“I was shocked, I just nodded and said yes,” she said. “I was crying and everyone around us was crying too.”
News of the engagement has spread fast among Katie and Aaron’s friends and family.
“People were shocked at the time but a lot have said it was coming and about time,” said Aaron.
While any proposal can be incredibly nerve-wracking, Aaron had to ensure he was extra organised.
“I asked Katie’s dad two months ago and had to get her ring made in advance as the jeweller was going on holiday,” he said.
“I knew she would want to have family and friends around when I asked, and it would be a day for celebrations anyway.”
A long-time member of Bildeston Bounders running club, Katie was inspired by her marathon-mad dad and admits to having caught the bug following her success.
“I’ve already signed up for next year’s marathon with my dad and brother,” she said. “And I’m hoping to complete another one somewhere before the end of the year.”
WHAT A SURPRISE: Katie Harvey and Aaron Keeble, who proposed after the London Marathon.
