Ryan Simpson from Long Melford, and James Gibbs from Bury St Edmunds, representing the West Suffolk College, scooped first prize at the Suffolk Show for the inter-college Dulux Painting & Decorating competition, last Thursday afternoon in Ipswich.

Ryan, 19, who is an apprentice for local firm John W Younger in Sudbury, scooped first prize with James, 19, in a two-day competition against other colleges, including Otley and Easton Colleges.

They were given an oriental theme and were challenged in colour wash, wallpapering, stencilling, marbling, oakwood grain effects, use of colour and accuracy skills.

A Dulux judge was on hand to oversee the competition, deciding that the West Suffolk College duo were the winners.

The pair were rewarded with Dulux material vouchers, tools and work clothing.

Technical demonstrator Dean Smith from the college said he was delighted the students’ success.
