A 20-year-old from Hadleigh has become one of the youngest to join the town council after triumphing in a by-election.
Ian Welsh, a Green party member, narrowly defeated Angela Wiltshire, Labour, to take up a seat on the council following voting on Thursday.
Mr Welsh, who lives in Allen Road and studies politics at university, will cover the north ward of the town. He was elected by 132 votes to 127.
“I was hoping to win, but I did not expect it,” said Mr Welsh, who went to Hadleigh High School.
“I was campaigning hard and I am looking forward to taking up the role.”
A key part of Mr Welsh’s campaign revolved around encouraging the town’s economy, the fight against Tesco’s attempts to build a new supermarket and the bid to save Cox’s Park.
“I want to help out in the community and do my civic duty,” he said.
Despite going to university in Lincoln Mr Welsh said he was committed to attending council meetings.
“I am quite happy to regularly make the train journey,” Mr Welsh said.
